Something Out of Nothing

OK. So I've always thought that a good photographer can make a "shot" out of nothing. Given any situation or setting, a pro can take a picture of anything and it will turn out great. Perhaps my expectations are too high.

So tonight, I decided to lay down on my couch with the 50mm prime and I should be able to take a picture and make it interesting. It took a while to find something interesting but I finally took this:

What is it? My PG&E orange construction vest. Interesting? Maybe. Creative? Perhaps. Orange? Yes.

Red Bean Cake

Joanne's mom made some tasty red bean cake when we were visiting for Christmas. The girls got so excited that they asked Mom to send them the recipe. Joanne made a great one today.

I end up taking a lot of food and craft photos for Joanne's blog and I plan on setting up a mini studio for the food shots eventually. Will have to learn how to do that so pics look like they come out of a magazine. :)

Beach in Alameda

While Joanne was at cousin Leslie's babyshower, I went shooting at a beach in Alameda.

This one was on the way to the beach. No idea what type of tree it is. It's got little red fruits.

Check out the weird ripples in the sand.

Another attempt at a wheat like weed. Because it was so bright, I kept lower the ISO and inceasing the shutter speed.

I was about to leave and saw a great opportunity to take a few more interesting pictures.

Orchids

A gift given to us for our December party.

I purposely framed it with the light source behind the flower. Kinda cool effect. Probably would turn out better with a stronger light.

Just Because Flowers

This was taken off of the reflection off the glass. Do you see the flowers in the background? If you look really carefully, I'm in there too.

With these next two images, I tried to have a black background. The surroundings weren't dark enough to make it completely black.

Depth of Field (DOF) Example

At the Chou house, Snoopies are abundant... and Joanne's gotta have Snoopy Christmas Lights.

Here one at f11 with lots of depth of field.

And here's one at f1.8 with very little depth of field. Excellent at isolating the subject. Love the bokeh.
